Matthew 22:41-45

Psalm 110:1 - Yahweh says to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, Until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet.

Matthew 22:41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,
Matthew 22:42 saying, "What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "Of David."
Matthew 22:43 He said to them, "How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,
Matthew 22:44 '[Yahweh] said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, Until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet?'
Matthew 22:45 "If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?"

The above scriptures are sometimes presented by trinitarians in an effort to prove that Jesus is Yahweh. It is claimed that since David called Jesus "Lord," that this means that Jesus was David's Lord at the time that David said this, and from this it is further claimed that Jesus was thus in existence from all eternity past.

Jesus' question was pertaining Jesus' being the son of David, and yet how David called Jesus "my lord." Usually, a father does not call his son "my lord."

Of course, David is speaking prophetically, of when Yahweh makes the promised son of the man David (Matthew 1:1; 9:6,27) both Christ and Lord. (Acts 2:36) Jesus was made "lord," and having become "lord" of the dead and the living, he also became the "lord" of David; Jesus was not the lord of David from all eternity past. The prophecy of Psalm 110:1 has its actual fulfillment after the ascension of Jesus, when Jesus was exalted and where he now sits at the right hand of Yahweh in heaven. -- Acts 2:32-34; Ephesians 1:20; Hebrews 1:3; 10:12,13; 12:2; 1 Peter 3:22.

"To this end Christ died, rose, and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living." (Romans 14:9) Of course, at the time that Jesus was exalted, David was still in the oblivious condition of the Bible hell (Ecclesiastes 9:10), where he will be until the last day, when all will be raised from the Bible hell, which is the result of the condemnation of death in Adam. (Acts 2:29; John 5:28,29; 6:39,40,44,54; 11:24; 12:47,48; Romans 5:12-19; 1 Corinthians 15:21,22; 2 Timothy 4:1; Revelation 20:4,6,12,13) Jesus has now become the life-giving spirit from heaven. (1 Corinthians 15:45) As such, he will, as the agent of his God and Father, raise the dead, including David, in the "last day." Jesus' regenerating (Matthew 19:28) the human race in the last day, in effect, makes Jesus the "last Adam," taking Adam's place as the father and lord of the human race. Thus, Jesus becomes not only the branch out of David and Jesse, but he is also the root of David, since David will only receive life through Jesus. -- Isaiah 11:1; Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15; Revelation 5:5; 22:16.
